0:44Now PlayingCancer in Family? Is It Really Hereditary? A cancer diagnosis in the family can immediately raise a frightening question: "Am I going to get cancer too?” But family history and hereditary cancer are not the same thing. Around 5–10% of cancers are linked to inherited genetic changes, according to the National Cancer Institute. Most cancers are associated with genetic changes that develop during a person's lifetime. So when should you actually be concerned about hereditary cancer? Multiple close relatives with related cancers, cancer diagnosed unusually young, certain combinations of cancers in a family, or a known inherited cancer-causing mutation can all warrant a discussion with a doctor or genetic counsellor.
In this Health Beat video, we break down the difference between family history, genetic risk and hereditary cancer, and explain when genetic testing may actually make sense.
