Police responding to reports of a family disturbance heard gunshots before the home caught fire. Eight relatives, including four children, were killed. Among them was 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere, who reportedly called 911 during the attack while trying to save her family. The suspected gunman, 44-year-old Alan Smith, was also found wounded and later died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Relatives said Smith had been asked to leave his parents’ home weeks earlier and had shown warning signs. Authorities have not established a motive.
