The alert, issued Friday by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), comes amid major disruptions in the strait, which typically handles about a fifth of global oil and natural gas trade.
Iran has restricted traffic in the waterway after attacks and threats against vessels following US and Israeli strikes on February 28. It later offered some ships alternative routes closer to its shoreline, charging fees, a system Washington has described as a “tollbooth” arrangement.
