May 3, 20263:17Now PlayingThe United States has warned shipping companies they could face sanctions if they make payments to Iran for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions escalate over control of the strategic waterway. The alert, issued Friday by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), comes amid major disruptions in the strait, which typically handles about a fifth of global oil and natural gas trade.
Iran has restricted traffic in the waterway after attacks and threats against vessels following US and Israeli strikes on February 28. It later offered some ships alternative routes closer to its shoreline, charging fees, a system Washington has described as a “tollbooth” arrangement.
