May 1, 20263:13Now PlayingThousands of workers gathered in Seoul on Friday to mark International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day. Members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions staged a large-scale rally near Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul, demanding the right to collective bargaining with primary contractors and calling for the protection of non-regular workers’ rights.
Large crowds marched and gathered near the square, holding banners and chanting during the rally. In his address to the crowd, Yang Kyung-soo, chairman of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, called for solidarity with workers globally, saying, “Let’s unite with the Iranian and Palestinian workers,” while urging unity with foreign workers and those without labor protections. Similar rallies were held across the country, marking the first Labor Day since the official renaming of the day to “Labor Day” and its designation as a full public holiday.
