0:46Now PlayingDuring a standard year of experimental operations at Alcator C-Mod, 4 months are set aside for maintenance work where the machine is filled with air and brought up to atmospheric pressure. Excess to the vacuum vessel is then available for scientist and engineers to enter and make modifications to the interior. This is an important period to install new instruments, calibrate old ones and fix known problems.
Note the tent that is set up outside the access port. In order to obtain the high quality vacuums inside our machine for fusion experiments, it is important that no oils are introduced to the internal surface. This includes the oils on your skin! Personnel that enter the machine have to wear full body clean suits to make sure that they don't accidentally leave a bit of themselves behind!
