Issa asked me (James/MDD) to add the definitions below as he informed me he was tired and accidentally reversed the terms Wahy and Ilham:
Wahy (وحي): Wahy refers to divine revelation in Islam. It is the communication of divine knowledge and guidance from God to humans. The most well-known form of Wahy is the Qur'an, which Muslims believe to be the literal words of God as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel. The Quran is considered the primary and final source of guidance for Muslims. Wahy also includes the Hadiths, which are the sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad.
Ilham (إلهام): Ilham is often translated as "inspiration." It refers to a form of inner spiritual or intuitive inspiration that a person may experience. While wahy is considered to be a direct communication from God to specific individuals like prophets, ilham is seen as a more general form of inspiration that may come to individuals beyond the prophethood. It is not considered on the same level as Wahy, and its reliability is not as absolute. Ilham can pertain to insights, ideas, or guidance that one feels is inspired or guided by a higher, spiritual source. This is usually received from a Wali or friend of G-d.
