2:59Now PlayingCorporations are taking advantage of lax regulations in Arizona to buy up water rights. One industrial farm in Pearce, AZ pumps nearly 900 million gallons of water each year. Meanwhile neighboring residents’ wells are running dry.
Last month, the Arizona Department of Water Resources implemented new regulations in this part of the state to ban the irrigation of new land, preventing corporations from buying up more property solely for the purpose of extracting water. The new regulations also require individuals and corporations to measure and report all groundwater withdrawals to the state.
Still, the vast majority of Arizona remains unregulated and vulnerable to abuse by corporations looking to capitalize on cheap water at any cost.
