Mitt Romney was married in 1969 in a civil ceremony. The next day he and his wife flew to Salt Lake and got married in the temple. This is very uncommon. Until May 6, 2019, members who married civilly had to wait a year before they went to the temple to be "sealed" or married for eternity. Why did this policy change? Why was it there to begin with? Why were some members excused from this policy while others were not?
