Did ICE “disappear” someone because of an autism awareness tattoo?
New reporting from Mother Jones reporters Noah Lanard and Isabela Dias reveals how immigrants are being swept up and targeted by the Trump administration for innocuous tattoos like flowers and birds—and yes, an autism awareness tattoo.
Using this pretense that tattoos mean they are gang members, the administration has shipped the Venezuelans to a prison in El Salvador accused of severely violating the human rights of inmates.
One prisoner, Neri Alvarado, is a baker with three tattoos. Two words— “brother” and “familia”—and one illustration of the autism awareness ribbon for his younger brother, who has autism.
“Anyone who’s talked to Neri for even an hour can tell you what a great person he is. Truly, as a family, we are completely devastated to see him going through something so unjust—especially knowing that he’s never done anything wrong,” his sister tells Mother Jones. “He’s someone who, as they say, wouldn’t even hurt a fly.”
