It comes from Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s defense of a Supreme Court ruling made a month ago that gave ICE the green light to launch raids and effectively detain people just because of how they look, along with where they work, the type of work they do, and the language they speak.
As Mother Jones reporter Pema Levy explains in this new video, Kavanaugh's concurrence dismisses an ICE stop as simply a minor inconvenience. He writes: “As for stops of those individuals who are legally in the country, the questioning in those circumstances is typically brief, and those individuals may promptly go free after making clear to the immigration officers that they are U. S. citizens or otherwise legally in the United States.”
But Kavanaugh’s chipper language is belied by multiple new lawsuits and high-profile raids that show them to be anything but brief.
