Toys too expensive this year? You can thank the Grinch (Trump).

At a December rally in Pennsylvania, President Donald Trump defended his tariff policies, saying, “You don’t need 37 dolls for your daughter. Two or three is nice. You don’t need 37 dolls.” It’s a call for sacrifice from a man building a $400 million ballroom, all in the name of bringing back better-made, American goods.

Back in May, Stephen Miller, Trump’s deputy chief of staff for policy, argued a similar point. He said that American families would rather pay more for a well-constructed American doll than a doll from China.

But according to The Toy Book editor-in-chief James Zahn, this idea that we’re going to bring back toy production is “intriguing and infuriating,” he says. “There isn't really this industry to bring back to the United States, because the bulk of it was never here.”

Since the major tariffs hit earlier this year, every publicly traded US toy company has cut jobs. The real damage from Trump’s tariffs isn’t only on store shelves. Watch the video for more.
