President Donald Trump recently gave an "election security" speech saying US elections were full of fraud and suggesting that China meddled in 2020 to steal the election from him. But the documents he released to back this up? They said the opposite. One key document noted that US intelligence assessed in 2020 that China preferred Trump lose but never tried to interfere. It also stated that Russia ran a covert operation to smear Biden to help Trump win. None of the documents showed there has been major election fraud.
This isn't new. A year ago Tulsi Gabbard brazenly misrepresented declassified intelligence records to accuse former President Barack Obama of "treason”—and these lies triggered a criminal investigation of former Obama aides.
The big story about Trump’s speech isn’t just that he once again made false claims. It’s that he's perverting intelligence agencies and turning them into tools for his own self-serving disinformation operation.
It’s good that many in the media fact-checked his phony-baloney allegations, but it’s not sufficient to cast Trump’s election claims as false and debunked. The president is directing a disinformation campaign against the American public and subverting the intelligence community to do so. This is yet another major Trump scandal, with tremendous consequences for the safety of the nation and the future of American democracy.
