What more of a surprise then to do a song from a game I've never touched before as my first super heavy song of year 3? Street Fighter was something I really shied away from in my earlier covers since it's been done so much. I really didn't want this to sound like everyone else's cover of Ken's Theme but I still wanted to keep as much of the original as possible (even if that meant having METAL vibraphones). I even went so far as to try one of those really lame hardcore 808 drops, but it ended up getting pretty much drowned out because the bass is so heavy. Hope this still does the song justice, though. Love this soundtrack and can't wait to do more!
The biggest trick with this cover was the absurd stretches for the chords. I wanted to combine the back melody of the song with the chords and it turned out to be very challenging. I've always hated using power chords all the way through a song so I'm really trying to incorporate a lot more triads and 9 and 11 chords. The bass was tough too but I think the part I was most proud of was that I was able to write a solo that really fit the song better than any of my other ones. It's all about pushing myself because that's the reason I do these videos! Try new things in hopes to get better!
Maybe something a bit jazzier next week? Hm...
