The Fat Electrician @the_fat_electrician and Yarnhub @Yarnhub have teamed up to tell you the incredible story of Bazooka Charlie. Charles Carpenter, known as "Bazooka Charlie," was a history teacher from Illinois who became a liaison pilot in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. Flying an L-4 Grasshopper, a small, fabric-winged plane, he initially spotted enemy positions and called in artillery fire. However, seeking a more direct impact, he modified his plane to carry six bazookas, transforming it into "Rosie the Rocketer". Carpenter gained notoriety for dive-bombing German tanks, particularly during the Battle of Arracourt, where his unconventional tactics helped sway the battle by preventing German advances in foggy conditions and allowing American forces to regain air superiority. Despite initial skepticism and a lack of detailed documentation, his actions led to multiple confirmed tank kills and earned him the nicknames "the Mad Major" and "Bazooka Charlie." After surviving the war and battling Hodgkin's lymphoma, he lived an additional 22 years beyond his prognosis, continuing to teach history. His daughter later helped validate his story and ensure his legacy was recognized. Mr. Terry reacts and responds!
