Hoser @h0ser tells us about the crazy history of Liberia. Liberia's modern history began in 1822 as a colony for free-born and formerly enslaved Black Americans, who declared independence in 1847 and established a republic modeled on the United States. This Americo-Liberian elite ruled as a dominant minority over the indigenous majority for 133 years, creating deep-seated inequality that erupted in 1980 when indigenous soldier Samuel K. Doe led a violent coup. Doe's own repressive regime led to a devastating civil war (1989-2003) initiated by warlord Charles Taylor, a conflict that shattered the country, killed over 200,000 people, and was infamous for its brutality. Mr. Terry reacts, comments, and adds more history!
