History Matters @HistoryMatters covers Austria-Hungary's failure in World War I, which was caused by a mix of confusing bureaucracy, ethnic tensions, and incompetent command. The empire operated three separate armies—the Austrian, Hungarian, and Common Army—creating a disjointed force where officers often could not speak the languages of their diverse soldiers. This fragmentation was worsened by political gridlock, as Hungarian politicians frequently blocked military funding to prioritize their own economic interests, leaving the army under-equipped. On the battlefield, the leadership was rusty and inept; having not fought a major war since 1866, Chief of Staff Conrad von Hötzendorf pursued aggressive, unrealistic strategies that ignored logistical realities. These failures led to catastrophic casualties in the opening months of 1914, essentially destroying the professional army and forcing the empire to rely heavily on German support for the duration of the war.
