The conflict began in 711 when the Umayyad Caliphate swiftly dismantled the Visigothic Kingdom following the Battle of Guadalete, leading to the establishment of Al-Andalus. Christian resistance was sparked by Pelayo at the Battle of Covadonga, which served as the symbolic starting point for the long reclamation effort. Over the centuries, the tide shifted through pivotal moments like the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, which decisively broke the power of the Almohad Empire and left only the Kingdom of Granada as a Muslim stronghold. The era finally concluded on January 2, 1492, when the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, captured Granada, effectively unifying Spain under Christian rule just as Christopher Columbus was set to sail for the Americas.
