In this video from @kurzgesagt, In the mid-20th century, the United States launched Project Plowshare, an ambitious and highly controversial initiative driven by physicist Edward Teller to repurpose thermonuclear weapons for peaceful civil engineering. Spanning two decades and costing hundreds of millions of dollars, the program proposed using massive nuclear detonations to reshape the planet by carving out harbors in Alaska, blasting new canals through Israel and Panama, and even utilizing nuclear fracking for energy extraction. However, the project's actual tests repeatedly resulted in dangerous failures, including unintended radioactive steam eruptions and widespread fallout that contaminated local environments and food supplies. Faced with insurmountable ecological dangers, public outrage, and flawed mathematical models, the hypothetical benefits of atomic construction never materialized, and Project Plowshare was officially canceled in 1977 without ever successfully completing a single infrastructure goal. Mr. Terry reacts and adds some more history!
