He attributes the left-leaning nature of cities to the "three Ds"—density, diversity, and degrees (higher education)—which naturally foster a reliance on collective government solutions and a high psychological openness to novelty. Conversely, rural areas lean right because their lifestyles prioritize individualistic problem-solving, tradition, and religious community, alongside shared material grievances like infrastructure neglect and school closures. This geographical divergence was set in motion by the demographic shifts of the Great Migration and the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s, and it was later supercharged in the 1990s by the economic fallout of NAFTA on small-town manufacturing coupled with rapid cultural shifts. Today, this divide is locked into place by self-sustaining mechanisms like geographic self-sorting, primary election incentives that reward ideological extremes, and algorithmic media echo chambers.
