In this video from SideQuest @SideQuestYT, during the Korean War, General Douglas MacArthur nearly dragged the United States into World War III due to his overwhelming ego and insistence on escalating the conflict against China. After executing a successful amphibious landing at Inchon that repelled North Korean forces, MacArthur pushed deeper into North Korea while recklessly dismissing warnings of Chinese intervention. When hundreds of thousands of Chinese troops entered the conflict and pushed American forces back to the 38th parallel, MacArthur refused President Harry S. Truman’s directives for a limited war and peace negotiations, instead advocating to drop atomic bombs along the border, launch aerial strikes and a naval blockade against mainland China, and invade with Nationalist forces from Taiwan. He actively sabotaged diplomatic efforts, publicly criticized the administration, and even attempted to manufacture a military provocation off the Chinese coast to force an escalation before President Truman ultimately relieved him of command in April 1951.
