Thus, the Court’s power and legitimacy rely on the trust that we, as a society, place in it. But as the Court tears down decades-old precedent in unpopular decisions that roll back long-held personal rights, and Justices Thomas and Alito face crises of credibility, that trust is crashing. When people stop believing in the systems that keep democracy running, those systems will cease to function.
