11:25Now PlayingRobin Benway’s “Far From the Tree” is a story about the emergence of love and support in an unconventional familial structure. It also explores the challenging, deeply personal topics that some teens have to confront as they mature: the way alcoholism devastates a family, the emotional complexities of adoption, inescapable racism, LGBTQ+ love, and the realities of teen pregnancy. “Sometimes, as a teenager, things just feel so wacky.,” says Benway. “You feel so big one minute and you feel so small the next.” Life as an adolescent is hard. But books like “Far From the Tree” provide support and guidance to teenagers as they navigate difficult life circumstances or confront new emotions.
