The East Coast was slammed with torrential rain and flash flooding that killed at least two people, turned streets into rivers, shut down subways, stranded drivers and prompted water rescues.

The tristate area was hit hard, with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy declaring a state of emergency, first responders commandeering local cars to rescue people stuck in floods, and widespread flight cancellations and delays.

New York City experienced a daily record rainfall of 2.64 inches, with 2.07 inches falling in less than one hour, prompting subway flooding.
