The United States adopted the motto, “e pluribus unum,” Latin for, “out of many, one,” to remind Americans of different backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures that they can coexist and come together for a common good. The Christian nationalist ideology now taking hold in many Republican circles opposes that pluralism, upon which this country was founded.
