Para liberarlos, los secuestradores pedían estatus político, dinero para financiar su movimiento y la liberación de cientos de guerrilleros encarcelados. El gobierno sabía que tenía que hacer algo para liberar a los rehenes. Por eso, un equipo de fuerzas especiales del ejercito, bajo el mando del coronel José Williams, comenzó a planear un rescate.
