A 1-year-old child dies after being fed water beads, batteries, and acetone.

In April, Iris Alfera's mother took the girl to the hospital, after finding "water beads" in her dirty diaper. Over the next few days, Iris passes about 20 water beads. She also passes 3 button-shaped batteries and a metal screw. After 4 days, the baby goes home with her mother.

After the hospital visit, Pennsylvania Child Youth Services, CYS, inspects each of the parents' homes and finds no issue at mom's residence, or the home dad, Bailey Jacoby shares with his girlfriend, Alesia Lynnae Owens. Iris lives with her mother full-time, but she continues to visit her father's home.

During a weekend visitation,  Bailey Jacoby goes to the grocery store, leaving Iris with his live-in girlfriend. As he prepares to check out,  Jacoby gets a call from Owens, who tells him something is wrong with Iris, she isn't acting like herself, and she is unresponsive. Jacoby tells Owens to call 911. Emergency responders find Iris breathing with a fixed gaze and weak response. She's transported to the hospital and she dies four days later.

Investigators discover Bailey Jacoby's girlfriend, Aleisia Owens, who was the last person to be with Iris alone, had been researching online the harm that water beads and batteries can cause children, before Iris ingested the items. Owens also conducted online research into household items that could cause serious harm or death to children, and made searches on "how to pass a polygraph" while Iris lay dying in the hospital.

Aleisia Owens, 21, the girlfriend of baby Iris' father, has been arrested for intentionally feeding the child harmful items. According to police, the child died of organ failure, a result of acetone poisoning.
