UPDATE: New developments in the shocking case of Charles Read, a paraplegic man wrongfully arrested by College Park Police for allegedly chasing down and assaulting a woman — despite being in a wheelchair for over 25 years. This update uncovers what happened to the officers involved, and whether anyone will face real accountability.
In March 2024, Officer Markenley Belotte arrested Read after Katherine Jensen falsely accused him of kicking in her door and fleeing on foot. Bodycam footage showed Read explaining he physically could not have committed the crime, yet officers pushed ahead with the arrest. Jensen later recanted, admitting confusion and mental distress led to her misidentifying the attacker.
Following public backlash and a viral media storm, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office dropped all charges, confirming Read could not have been present at the crime scene. Belotte resigned in lieu of termination after multiple internal issues came to light, while his supervising officer faced no disciplinary action. Jensen has not been charged.
This video breaks down the legal fallout, the department’s internal response, and what Charles Read may pursue next in civil court.
