The shift in the U.S. position also set off a wave of protests, further complicating the peace process. Palestinians say they now feel the U.S. cannot be a neutral broker of any future agreement between them and Israel. But Jerusalem, considered a holy center for the world’s three major monotheistic religions, has always been a contested city.
