Last year, 6,590 people were killed in Rio de Janeiro and at least 120 police officers also died. For nearly a decade, Brazil has consistently ranked in the top 20 countries worldwide for homicide rates, per capita, according to studies from the United Nations. Frustrated with the violence and feeling that the police and government fail to keep them informed, locals turn to smartphone apps like Fogo Cruzado—Portuguese for “crossfire”—which help Brazilians track and monitor violent incidents in their neighborhoods in near real-time, alerting them to areas to avoid.
