As fires engulfed the surrounding the hillsides in 2017, the staff evacuated guests while Peter Lang, owner of Safari West, stayed behind. Through the night, the owner of Safari West, Peter Lang , who is in his early 70s, ran around the property extinguishing burning debris carried by the winds. No animals were lost, and the majority of his resort did not burn.
