Burnout is more common among physicians than any other American workers, with the majority of doctors reporting that the leading causes of stress are bureaucratic tasks such as filling out an exhaustive amount of patients’ health records. Today, for every hour a doctor spends with a patient, she spends at least double that amount charting it. This paperwork lengthens already-long work hours coupled with the intensive work of diagnosing and healing patients within a convoluted healthcare system. For many physicians, the relentless stress can take a toll and lead to depression, which is one reason why doctors are far likelier than other Americans to die by suicide.
