Divers with the U.S. Army's 569th Engineer Dive Detachment worked with Washington State in July to remove lost fishing nets from America’s marine public lands in the Puget Sound, a massive cleanup project that the state started in 2002. Deep sea diving to 140-foot depths is dangerous, but if successful, will improve the health of the ocean’s ecosystem. The derelict nets—also known as ghost gear—were used decades ago for salmon fishing, and can still ensnare and harm today’s sea life.
