It’s a call to reduce the size of police department budgets, in order to reallocate resources to other parts of the community. Last week, Los Angeles took a step in that direction when LA Mayor Eric Garcetti announced his commitment to reallocate $150 million of the LAPD budget to communities of color in the upcoming fiscal year. This comes after years of attempted reform and decades of tension between the LAPD and the city’s Black population.
