The hardest part of their job, they say, is having to tell a mother that their son didn’t make it. “It doesn’t get easier,” Dr. Tom Scalea says. “It gets worse.” Scalea says he’s had to have that conversation more times than he wants to remember. “It makes me sad that in the United States of America, this is the best we think we can do,” he says.
