12:36Now PlayingJon Kostas struggled for years with alcohol addiction, beginning in his teens, before joining a study led by NYU Langone Health. Researchers found that two doses of psilocybin pills, along with psychotherapy, helped people with alcohol use disorder reduce drinking for at least eight months after receiving their first dose of the drug. Kostas describes his experience as a participant in the study in an interview with NBC News' Harry Smith, adding that he's "indifferent" to alcohol now and has maintained his sobriety since 2015. "There are no words to explain how crazy and shocking this is," Kostas says of his experience.
