The defense argued that Mr. Trump is innocent, and that there is no direct evidence tying him to the alleged crime of falsifying business records. Prosecutors pointed to the testimony of star prosecution witness Michael Cohen, who said Mr. Trump ordered the payoff and then covered it up. Outside the courthouse, the Biden and Trump campaigns held news conferences. Actor Robert De Niro appeared as a surrogate for the Biden campaign, saying Americans' freedoms were at stake if Mr. Trump returns to the White House.
