Now that humans are beginning to think about colonizing Mars, it’s not long before people are going to want to set up governments and decide who owns what. Are there any international treaties in place to keep anyone from owning the whole planet, whether they’re rulers like Vladimir Putin or rich and powerful moguls like Bill Gates and Richard Branson? To answer this fan-submitted Cosmic Query, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice talk about the current Outer Space Treaty, and speculate what owning land in space might be like in the future. Neil thinks it may look like the Homestead Act which governed the expansion of the United States. Perhaps, if you pay to get there and build up the property, you may get to own the land! Neil and Chuck end up speculating on human nature – with a discussion of Monopoly and a Steven Wright joke about the classic board game.
