"WASHINGTON --
Independent Truckers Association President Mike Parkhurst says 50,000 to 60,000 of the nation's 100,000 independent truckers are taking part in the strike which began at midnight Sunday. Violence spread to at least 21 states in the protest of President Reagan's program to hike fuel taxes by 5 cents a gallon and increase road use taxes.
WASHINGTON -- Teamsters Union President Roy L. Williams Tuesday condemned the 'horrible violence,' following the fatal shooting of a union truck driver. George Capps was killed by rifle fire Monday night while driving between Smithfield and Newton Grove, N.C.
WASHINGTON -- the Department of Transportation Tuesday disputed the independent truckers' estimate of drivers honoring the strike and said a 'conservative estimate' was that less than 20,000 of them had joined the strike.
NEW YORK -- Police posted extra patrols at the Hunts Point Terminal Market in the Bronx in an effort to avert trouble. The market is New York City's largest food distribution point.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Six truckers were fired on by passengers of a pickup truck, police said. One man's head was grazed by a bullet that deflected off metal inside his truck.
WASHINGTON -- Sen. Rudy Boschwitz, R-Minn., urged Congress to cut and spread out the new tax on heavy trucks -- reducing it from $1,600 to $1,200 and phasing it in over a three-year period instead of two.
ORLANDO, Fla. -- A spokeswoman for the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association says the strike would have to last for several days before growers in the state would begin to feel the pinch. She said a prolonged strike 'could disrupt orderly marketing' because 'fresh produce can't wait too long.
NEW YORK -- Many truck stops across the nation reported business has dropped off dramatically because of the truckers strike. Many drivers said they feared violence and parked their rigs."
