0:47Now PlayingThe New England Patriots surprisingly released quarterback Cam Newton on Tuesday, according to reports, effectively making rookie Mac Jones the starter heading into Week 1.
Newton, 32, was expected to be named the starter after starting last season and throughout training camp, including Sunday’s preseason finale against the Giants.
But like last season, when he went 7-8 and threw just eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions for the Patriots, Newton struggled during the preseason.
Newton completed 14 of 21 passes for 162 yards, with one touchdown and one interception over three preseason games.
He also missed the first three days of practice last week after violating COVID-19 protocol, which may have further opened the door for Jones.
