One of the victims was a 10-month-old girl, the daughter of Saleh Waleed, 22, who was also killed in the blaze. The Post’s veteran metro reporter Kevin Sheehan walks us through this heartbreaking story, plus the decision to not show every detail of the tragedy.
When Sheehan went to the scene, he uncovered footage from a neighbor’s doorbell camera across the street. “You can clearly hear the kids screaming and banging. They were trapped,” he explains. The Post made the call to only publish non-graphic portions of the video, despite it circulating on social media. It was later taken down on Facebook at the mother’s request.
