Disgraced South Carolina attorney and convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh was sentenced Friday morning to two consecutive life terms for the grisly 2021 murders of his wife and son.

The once-prominent legal scion was stone-faced as he learned his fate at the Colleton County Courthouse in Walterboro, just hours after the jury returned the guilty verdicts following less than three hours of deliberation.

The sentence was read after a long speech from Judge Clifton Newman, who said it was “heartbreaking” to witness his former colleague’s spectacular fall from grace as it played out in the media over the last year and a half.

“When will [the lies] end?” Newman asked Murdaugh, who previously admitted on the stand that he frequently deceived his partners and family in the throes of his drug addiction, and continued to lie to police throughout the investigation into Maggie and Paul’s deaths.
