0:57Now PlayingBeachgoers spotted an alligator in the surf on Dauphin Island off the coast of Alabama, over the weekend, seemingly comfortable in the salty waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Videos shared by Matt Harvill show an alligator that appears to be about 5 feet long swimming in the shallows of the island beach on Sunday.
Although alligators live primarily in fresh water, they can tolerate salt water for hours or “even days,” according to the National Ocean Service, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
There is fresh water on the interior of Dauphin Island, and alligators live in the area, so they can occasionally be spotted on the beach.
