YouTube Description
as posted by the channelThe White House said Monday the Pentagon has been "working on outbound fixes" after millions of military emails were for years mistakenly sent to recipients in the African country of Mali because of a typo.
The issue has occurred over the past decade when people accidentally typed .ML - the country domain for Mali - instead of .MIL, the suffix to all US military email addresses.
The Financial Times first reported the issue and said the typo issue has exposed highly sensitive information of some of the military's top officers.
Speaking at the White House on Monday, National security council spokesman John Kirby said the Department of Defense has taken steps to correct the problem and "now for quite some time, have in place a tool that that stops outbound emails that don't have the .mil at the end from going."
"They're obviously been mindful of this for quite some time and have been, again, working on outbound fixes and working on training for any problems of inbound traffic," he said.
On a separate topic, Kirby also confirmed that President Joe Biden will meet with Pope Francis' peace envoy Tuesday as part of the Holy See's peace and humanitarian initiatives for Ukraine.
Cardinal Matteo Zuppi is visiting Washington through Wednesday, a trip that follows his recent mission to Moscow and an earlier stop in Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Kirby said the cardinal is coming “at the specific request” of Pope Francis and referred to “thousands and thousands of Ukrainian children that have been shipped off to basically concentration camps in Russia or Russian occupied territory.”
“We look forward to having those discussions,” he told reporters in Washington.
