1:15Now PlayingFormer first lady Rosalynn Carter – the Georgia-born humanitarian, champion of mental health and wife of 39th President Jimmy Carter – died on Sunday at the age of 96.
A statement from the Carter Center said that Rosalynn died peacefully at home, with her family by her side.
“Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” President Carter said.
“She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”
Her family announced in May 2023 that she had been diagnosed with dementia and she later joined the former president on hospice care at their Plains home in November.
