1:10Now PlayingSpectacular drone footage showed lava seeping from a long fissure northeast of Grindavik, Iceland, late on Monday, December 18.
The footage was captured by Hordur Kristleifsson, who said he piloted a drone from the nearby town of Vogar.
The Icelandic Met Office said that the eruption from the fissure started at 10:17 pm local time on Monday.
The eruptive fissure is about 4 km (2.5 miles) long, the office said on Tuesday, with the northern end just east of Stora-Skogfell and the southern end just east of Sundhnuk, about 3 km (1.8 miles) northeast of Grindavik.
The town was evacuated in November due to seismic activity.
The Met Office said early on Tuesday that lava from the eruption had caused “significant ground deformation” near the fissure, though the intensity of the eruption was weakening.
Several roads near Grindavik remained closed on Tuesday.
