2:01Now PlayingFlowing lava burst a hot-water pipe and covered roads during a volcanic eruption on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula on February 8, leading authorities to declare a state of emergency.
Iceland’s Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management said the areas of Reykjanesbaer, Sudurnesjabaer, Grindavik, and Vogum were without hot water. The towns and villages have an estimated population of more than 20,000.
Officials told RUV that they hoped to restore hot water to the areas by the end of Friday. Residents have been asked to use hot water and electricity sparingly until repairs could be conducted.
Mesmerizing aerial footage recorded by Hordur Kristleifsson showed the lava slowly moving over a road junction on the peninsula north of the evacuated town of Grindavik.
According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the strength of the eruption was decreasing.
