1:08Now PlayingDespite persistent popular opposition, and criticism from the EU, for which it is a candidate member, a controversial “foreign agents” bill was approved on Tuesday, May 14, by lawmakers in Georgia.
Footage livestreamed by Georgian parliament member Khatia Dekanoidze showed heated scenes in the chamber earlier on in the day. At one point, several MPs were caught up in a brawl.
Crowds have repeatedly rallied against against the law, which they say echoes similar legislation in Russia. It will require organizations receiving more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad to register as agents of foreign influence.
