1:20Now PlayingIndia's police fired tear gas and water cannons in the eastern city of Kolkata as clashes with demonstrators protesting against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor turned violent on Tuesday (August 27).
Hundreds of people chanted slogans against the Aug. 9 attack and gathered behind police barricades as authorities fired water cannons and tear gas at several junctures in an attempt to disperse the protesters. Dozens of people later tore apart a barricade as anti-riot police wielding long sticks tried to stop them.
The attack in the eastern city of Kolkata has triggered demands for justice for the victim and greater safety for women at hospitals, with doctors in several places refusing to see non-emergency patients.
A police volunteer has been arrested for the crime and the federal police have taken over the investigation.
