The monster storm — one of the largest ever recorded in the Gulf of Mexico — picked up power as neared neared the coast, passing within 160 miles off southwest Florida.
It reached category 3 status around 2 p.m. Thursday, with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph.
Helene is expected to reach Florida’s Big Bend between 8 and 11 p.m. Thursday as a major hurricane with winds around 125 mph — bringing deadly, catastrophic storm surge to a 100-mile stretch of the Gulf Coast.
