2:31Now PlayingTaiwan’s lawmakers scuffled in chaotic disputes over a series controversial legislation on Friday (December 20).
The major opposition party the Kuomintang (KMT) and its allies pushed for bills aimed at amending laws including stricter rules on outing elected officials to government budgeting as well as changes to its constitutional court.
At one stage lawmakers from KMT blocked the entrance to the parliament as lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) tried to fight their way into the chamber.
DPP lawmakers said the amendments to the constitutional court will jeopardize Taiwan’s constitutional integrity, making it difficult for constitutional judges to challenge legislation.
Thousands of protesters gathered outside parliament, calling for the opposition parties to drop the legislation which they see as damaging to Taiwan’s democracy.
